In Gilbert, Arizona, the Seville Golf and Country Club witnessed an exceptional display of skill and precision as Peiyun Chien, affectionately known as “Money,” showcased her undeniable talent. During the Ford Championship’s thrilling commencement, Chien shot an impeccable 7-under 65, vaulting to the top of the leaderboard, signalling the start of a high-scoring affair at this much-anticipated event.

The tournament, nestled in the scenic Phoenix suburb, became a battleground for golf’s finest, thanks to its generous fairways and impeccable greens. These conditions facilitated a barrage of impressive scores, culminating in a cut-off at 5 under, a record-tying moment for the LPGA.

The spectacle continued with Arizona’s own Sarah Schmelzel, a three-time high school state champion, delivering a stunning 9-under 63. Hot on her heels, Yuka Saso matched this remarkable score, further highlighting the course’s favourable conditions.

Yet, the day belonged to Hannah Green, who, despite feeling under the weather, crafted a historic round. With 11 birdies, Green’s performance was only second to Annika Sorenstam’s legendary round in Phoenix. Her bogey-free 61 not only set a personal best but also positioned her as a frontrunner in the tournament.

Sarah Schmelzel’s home advantage

Sarah Schmelzel’s home advantage shone brightly as she tied with Chien at 13 under, closely trailing Green. Her performance, embellished with local support and a flawless 63, underscored her potential for her first tour victory.

Adding to the narrative, Caroline Masson, in her second tournament post-maternity break, demonstrated her competitive spirit with a 65, highlighting the diversity and resilience of the competitors.

The event also had its share of heartbreaks, with Jennifer Song’s ace on the 14th being a highlight, though it wasn’t enough to secure her a spot in the weekend’s rounds. The tournament, thus far, promises an unpredictable finale, with weather conditions poised to introduce a new layer of challenge for the contenders.

As the Ford Championship progresses, the Seville Golf and Country Club remains a testament to the sport’s evolving dynamics, showcasing talents old and new, each aiming to etch their names in golfing lore.
