Scottie Scheffler, the recent Masters champion, has revealed that his fierce determination to win will not diminish, despite golf becoming less of a priority in his life. Scheffler secured a four-shot victory over Sweden’s rising star Ludvig Aberg at Augusta National on Sunday.
The American golfer’s focus will soon shift to the impending arrival of his first child with his wife Meredith. “I’m not going to intentionally take my eye off the ball,” said Scheffler. “I still love competing. I love winning. I hate losing.” However, the world number one admitted that his priorities will change, with his son or daughter and his wife becoming the main focus, relegating golf to fourth place.
Scheffler’s victory marks his third win in his past four tournaments and his second major, adding to his 2022 Masters title. Since his first Green Jacket triumph, the 27-year-old has been the world’s best player, showcasing his dominance in almost all metrics. His only struggle has been with his putting, which has prevented him from converting more of his 18 consecutive top-12 finishes into wins.
That changed in March when Scheffler won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship, cementing his form heading into the Masters. The victory sees him join Tiger Woods as the only players to win both the PGA Tour’s flagship Players title and the Masters in the same season.
Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, who won this title
Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, who won this title in 2012 and 2014 with Bubba Watson, described the golfer as “a different kind of special.” Scheffler held off the challenge of Aberg, who was trying to become the first debutant to win the Masters since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979, as well as fellow Americans Collin Morikawa and Max Homa in the final round.
Aberg, a 24-year-old Swede, is enjoying a meteoric rise in the game, having turned professional just 10 months ago. He has already won events on both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour and played a key role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory over the United States in Rome. Despite his impressive performance, Aberg acknowledged that Scheffler is an “unbelievable player” who makes his peers better and inspires them to want to beat him.
As Scheffler prepares to embrace fatherhood, he remains focused on continuing his dominance in the sport. With his unwavering determination and his newfound priorities, the golf world can expect to see Scottie Scheffler continue to make his mark on the game.
